When you come to Mexico you should keep in mind that you can't keep living like in Europe or other places. There are some basics you need to remember:
DO'S
1. Do learn and practice Spanish while you're here. Doesn't matter if it's not 100% perfect. As long as they understand what you want to say the Mexicans will be very happy that you're trying to learn their language.
2. Do make friends with locals. If you stay within your group of exchange students you won't learn as much about the Mexican culture and people.
3. Do go out a lot - we all know that your priority here is not studying but having fun.
4. Do travel as much as you can, time passes by faster as you might think. There are always a lot of public holidays you can use.
DON'TS
1. Do never ever drink water from the tap. You can buy bottled water (agua purificada) at each corner.
2. Don't flush toilet paper or other stuff down the toilet. Merida doesn't have a sewerage system. So if you don't want your toilet blocked and smelling ugly don't flush paper.
3. Don't be punctual. In Mexico it's normal to be at least 30 up to 1 hour late if you're invited to a Mexican's house. Being punctual is considered rude.
4. Don't stay alone at your house because you're homesick, go out and make friends.
That's what came to my mind right now - to be continued :)
